In Cape Town, I volunteered at a local non-profit called Dance for All. They encourage the arts as an outlet for under-resourced youth in Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Nyanga, all townships outside of the city. There, I played the roll of part time marketing intern troll part time dance teacher. The modern classes I taught were attended mostly by male dancers, age 18-23. Besides being a practice in intense fear curbing, the experience was neretic in the perspective shift it invited. These guys slayed me in their athleticism and rhythm. Many classes were ended in a spent, sweaty huddle; verbally sparing in question form over curiosities about one another's cultures, communities, histories. I took photos of them because I didn't know how else to capture their beauty, and how incredible it felt to be let into their space. All this amidst the slipperiness of time.
